On May 7, over 200 Green Door friends and supporters of Green Door gathered at the JW Marriott in Washington, DC, for the 2012 Remarkable Journeys Gala. This annual event celebrates those who are helping individuals with mental illnesses on their journeys toward independence as well as recognizes the achievements of our clients. The program opened with a video featuring the remarkable journeys of Willie Williams and Tanya Rogers, two Green Door clients. Their very candid remarks about the struggles on their road to recovery and the ways in which their lives have changed since coming to Green Door, were moving and inspiring to all. Green Door honored two individuals who have worked hard on behalf of those living with mental illness. House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer of Maryland received The Green Door Remarkable Journeys Award for his work advocating for mental health parity. Representative Hoyer was an outspoken supporter of the 2008 Paul Wellstone-Pete Domenici Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act as well as an important player in the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The Remarkable Journeys Award was presented to Representative Hoyer by his longtime friend and colleague, Senator Roy Blunt of Missouri. The inaugural Green Door Spirit Award was presented to Donald Graham, Chairman and CEO of The Washington Post Company, to honor his longtime personal commitment to Green Door and was presented to him by J. Willard Marriott, Jr. In his gracious acceptance remarks, Mr. Graham thanked the staff and clients of Green Door for all their hard work, and once again acknowledged Willie Williams and Tanya Rogers, who were in attendance at the Gala. The evening concluded with a breathtaking performance by Grammy Award-winning musician Judy Collins, who not only wowed the crowd with a performance of four songs, but also spoke candidly about her own struggles with depression when she was young. Ms. Collins brought several guests to tears with the performance of “Wings of Angels,” a heartbreaking ballad she wrote in memory of her late son, who suffered from depression.
